Image Analysis of the Mitochondrial Network Morphology With Applications in Cancer Research

Mitochondria are dynamic organelles that integrate bioenergetics, biosynthesis, and signaling in cells regulate redox homeostasis, apoptotic pathways, cell proliferation differentiation. Depending on the environmental conditions, mitochondrial morphology dynamically changes to match energy demands. The dynamics is related initiation, migration, invasion of diverse human cancers thus affects cancer metastasis, metabolism, drug resistance, stem survival. We reviewed current image-based analytical tools machine-learning techniques for phenotyping different lines from confocal microscopy images. listed applied pipelines packages available ImageJ/Fiji, CellProfiler, MATLAB, Java, Python analysis fluorescently labeled mitochondria images compared their performance, usability applications. Furthermore, we discussed potential automatic segmentation, classification prediction abnormalities using machine learning techniques.
